The Department of Special Education was established by Presidential Decree 177/April 28, 1993, Presidential Decree “On the Renaming of Schools—Establishment, Organization, and Operation of Schools and Departments at the University of Thessaly.” The Department, which is part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, is based in the city of Volos. The Department began operating in September 1998. The Department’s mission is to train Special Education Teachers for Preschool and School Education. As part of the Department’s curriculum, students are given the opportunity to gain experience working with the following groups of students with special needs:
- intellectual disability
- hearing impairments
- visual impairments
- autism spectrum disorder
- learning disabilities
The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education is administered by the Departmental Assembly, which consists of:
- the Department Chair,
- the Department Vice Chair,
- the Division Directors,
- the faculty members of the Department
- three (3) representatives—one from each category—from among the members of the Special Teaching Staff (EEP), the Department’s Special Teaching Staff (E.D.I.P.) and Technical and Laboratory Staff (E.T.E.P.), who are elected, along with their alternates, for a one-year term, with the possibility of reelection, from a single ballot per category, by direct, secret, and universal vote by all members of the relevant staff category within the Department.
The Departmental Assembly is legally constituted and operates even if representatives from some of the above categories have not been elected. Undergraduate students do not vote on matters concerning graduate and doctoral studies. The main responsibilities of the Assembly are: general oversight of the Department’s operations, ensuring compliance with laws and internal regulations, determining general educational policy, as well as planning and developing the Department’s strategy within the framework of the broader decisions of the University Senate. The Assembly is headed by the Department Chair, who is elected by a special electoral college and whose main responsibilities include ensuring the implementation of the Assembly’s decisions and overseeing the Department’s operations.
